Officer-involved shooting under investigation after high-speed chase damages deputy vehicle in Callaway County

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A Fulton woman was arrested Saturday night after a high-speed chase in Callaway County.

According to a news release from the Callaway County Sheriff's Office, Sydney Akers, 29, "nearly T-boned" a deputy vehicle around 11 p.m. Saturday on Westminster Drive near 4th Street, resulting in the deputy's attempt to pull her over.

A pursuit ensued as Akers drove westbound on State Road F. The release says she intentionally pressed the brakes several times in front of the pursuing deputies chasing her, causing a crash that damaged a patrol vehicle and her own.

The chase ended on State Road F near County Road 341, but Akers refused to leave the vehicle, according to the release. She indicated to law enforcement through statements that she wanted to be shot and had a gun.

The release says a deputy fired at Akers, but it's not clear if she was hurt or if the shot hit anything. ABC 17 News has asked for clarification from the Callaway County Sheriff and the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Following the shot being fired, law enforcement continued to demand that Akers leave the vehicle as more deputies arrived on scene. A "less-lethal projectile" was then used.

It's unclear exactly how Akers left her vehicle, but according to the release, she was taken into custody and transported to a hospital for "non-life-threatening injuries."

Akers is being held without bond in the Callaway County Jail and faces 12 charges, including first-degree assault or attempted assault resulting in serious physical injury or involving a special victim, second-degree assault involving a special victim, armed criminal action, and aggravated fleeing from a stop or detention.

The remaining charges include resisting arrest for a felony, DWI as a prior offender, driving while revoked or suspended, obstructing government operations, leaving the scene of an accident, careless and imprudent driving involving an accident, exceeding the posted speed limit by 26 miles per hour or more, and failing to stop at a stop sign.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol is investigating the "officer-involved shooting." ABC 17 News has reached out to MSHP for more information.

Akers previously made headlines more than a decade ago in connection with charges of second-degree domestic assault and first-degree child endangerment.
