Tracking scattered rain and a big cooldown

TODAY: Wednesday is starting wet, with widespread showers on the heels of storms from Thursday night. Rain and clouds will keep the forecast cool, especially in comparison to Tuesday's heat. Highs are forecast in the 70s. Dry time is likely from late morning through late afternoon, but a few showers may remain across the region in this window.

TONIGHT: More shower chances return this evening, but thunderstorms may return overnight as a surface warm front lifts into the region. This would disproportionately impact the late overnight into the commute hour on Thursday. Locally heavy rain and lightning are more likely after 3 a.m. on Thursday.

EXTENDED: Thursday likely starts wet thanks to scattered thunderstorms. Some may have dry time through midday, especially south of I-70 where highs are the warmest. Eventually, rain returns for all, as a cold front works in Thursday night. This will bring showers and possibly storms Thursday evening. The front will also bring a potent cooldown. Highs are in the 70s thanks to rain Wednesday and Thursday, but north wind changes out the airmass altogether for Friday. We'll have highs in the 60s, if not 50s, in a few spots on Friday and Saturday. Some spots in the north may be at risk of frost on Saturday morning, with Columbia's forecast low in the upper 30s. A return to a milder airmass is forecast next week.
